Handley Hangs Tight, Lady Jackets Pull Away for the Win
Handley may be a smaller school, but the Tigers brought some spunk to Larry Davidson Court to contend against the Lady Jackets in a game night which spotlighted Oxford’s girls basketball program.
Compared to the previous game against Southside, Oxford managed to spread the stats among more players, which included three players reaching double-digit scoring: Ashleigh Jackson (14 points), Makayla Kidd (12 points), and Justyce Smith (10 points). Jackson and Smith also pounded the boards with 10 and 15 rebounds, respectively, earning them double-doubles on the night.
This was a game about roles, shining the light on the importance of every Lady Jacket. In the locker room after the game, Coach Melissa Bennett stressed the tremendous value of every player seeing the need to fill a role – which often changes game to game – and praised her team for getting that done against the Tigers.
Oxford came out in the second half a little flat against a Handley team that refused to surrender. But their fourth quarter fight pulled them through.
Other Jackets scoring included Tremeria Britt (9), Halaya Harmon (6), Anna Bolton (4), and Aumaria Lindsay (4).
The Lady Jackets (6-3) face Pell City (6-2) in a game that has been postponed because of inclement winter weather to Monday, December 11.
